*To be sad that my little girl is moving to every 3-hour feedings rather than 2? Mommy didn't realize how much she liked being needed like that.
*To be sad that she's outgrowing those newborn prefolds? She's growing up too fast!
*To want to wake her up so I can see her smile? (believe me, I won't! It took her too long to go down for a nap this evening)
A blog following the adventures of our little miracle girl Emma and her miracle brother, Aaron.

Peaceful Morning
Last night was the third night of a fairly good night -- even though it took a while for her to get calmed down, she slept in 3-hour increments for the most part. If we can get this 10pm fussiness managed, I think we'll be doing great! We've narrowed it down to gas and/or just general fussiness.
So today is Day #4 of Mommy being off of all dairy. It's an experiment to see if it's actually going to affect her little system and make the gas better, or whether the gas is just a normal amount. It's really not that much, but it bothers her SO much -- I think it hurts her little bottom when it finally works its way out more than it bothers her little gut.
Other milestones for Mommy, Daddy & Emma:
* Today is Day #9 of exclusively cloth diapering! We're SO happy to be away from the disposables at night, and I think Emma is happier too.
* We're moving up to the next size prefolds! Her newborn ones are finally just WAY too small and tight, so even though they're supposed to fit up to 10 pounds (and she's not quite there), we're moving up to the next size. I can tell it was a good thing that we changed detergent because you can definitely feel the softness difference between the old prefolds (they feel crunchy) and the new prefolds (very soft). Hopefully she enjoys that too.
* We discovered our reflection! I ordered a crib mirror from Babies R Us and we found a way to put it in her pack-n-play for diaper changes. She'll look at herself and self-soothe while we change her, or fix supper, or eat, or whatever. It doesn't last a long time, but long enough.
While she's napping, Mommy is going to run up and take a much-needed shower. Emma had a very large, mucousy spit-up this morning and Mommy's chest smells like baby vomit. Not as nice of a smell as clean baby, LOL. :)

First Piece of "Official" Mail
Emma got her OWN mail today from the social security administration! Yes, we have a social security card. Wow. :) So Mommy set up a savings account for Ms. Emma effective today, too bad interest rates are so horrible (1.25% APY). Hopefully starting this early will help her with her college ambitions!

Best Night So Far
I know I'm jinxing myself by typing this, but...
We had a fairly good night last night. Daddy did calming duty, and brought her up around 11:30. She slept solidly until 2am, when she ate and got changed. She went right back to sleep and slept until 5am, and ate and needed changed. She fussed some and needed changed again, and then fell back to sleep around 5:30, and slept solidly until 8am.
She was up from 8-9:30 am, very alert and engaged! So we did tummy time, and we played with Mommy & Daddy, and she just fell asleep again. So our "one thing" for today is putting her in her actual crib to nap! We got our baby monitor this week, so we can actually do it now. Mommy is feeling a little anxious about having her that far away from me (she's upstairs in her bedroom and I'm down here in the living room), but I know I can run up at anytime. The monitor is so sensitive we can actually hear her *breathing*!! Amazing.
We'll have to see how tonight goes... fingers crossed!

Emma's Mobile
The first mobile we got for the crib is jungle animals, and doesn't have enough color contrast for Emma to really see well. I found this mobile in the clearance area at Babies R Us for $7, it's got some nice color contrast and Emma has started tracking it with her eyes! She doesn't stay entertained for long, but it's long enough for Mommy to run to the bathroom.
I cannot believe my little girl is growing up so fast. She's holding her head steadier now (need to get another video of that) and spending more time with her eyes open. I'm spending as much time as I can cuddling with her, because I have a feeling that in the blink of an eye, she'll be heading off to college and there won't be any more cuddles. *sniffle*

Post-Partum Visit (and more)
I had my post-partum follow-up this morning at 9am, exactly 5 weeks and 2 days after Emma was born. I am still spotting just a little, but it's virtually nothing. The OB said I was doing a lot better and the uterus was feeling good. She had them draw more blood for a CBC just to double-check on the anemia, but she said the next time I needed to come back was in 6 months for my annual exam. We talked about birth control, post-partum depression, and that was it. I absolutely *adore* my OB and even though we're switching insurance for me and she's not in-network, I'm still going to go to her for my OB care.
I also think I finally figured out my wrap, and she's been sleeping in it for the last 2 hours! It works great -- Mommy ate, is typing on here, and did laundry. But my back is starting to hurt, so she needs to come out (and it's getting close to eating time for her!).
Oh -- and she's outgrowing her newborn clothes. :( Mommy sorted through and we're going to try and wear everything one more time, and take pictures of it all. I can't believe how big she's getting already! Luckily, with spit-up, we can get a couple of outfit changes in one day, LOL.
Pictures of the wrap!
From the front... (sorry for the dirty bathroom mirror!)

And from the side...

And a bonus picture from this morning!! This is one of her newborn outfits (she's wearing a matching bib, which will stay in rotation) and is almost not long enough for her.

Pictures have been printed out and will go in the mail tomorrow for the Grandparents!

Tuesday Weight
At 5w1d of age, she's exactly 9 pounds!
Now, I would be really happy about that except she hasn't gained as much as she typically did. From week 2 to week 3, she gained a pound in 8 days. From week 3 to week 4, she gained 9 1/2 oz in 7 days. I'm not sure why she slowed down so much, she's eating fine and still wetting/pooping fine. She is eating for shorter time periods (5-7 minutes instead of 10-12) but she acts full and doesn't want the other boob. I guess when I weigh her next week, we'll know if everything's ok!

Happy 5 Weeks!
Mommy definitely isn't as pale as she was a few weeks back!

In the picture, you can see a necklace I'm wearing -- my cousin Amber sent the silver disc with Emma's name on it and a pearl, and I put the silver butterfly on it. A friend of mine made that for me, it has the birthstones of my 3 angels on it. I thought they were appropriate together, as my three angels are watching over Emma and I.

Finding Our Way
We're slowing getting there... just when we think we've got things "figured out," she throws us a new curveball. I love being a Mommy!
Our "one" thing for today (or rather, last night) was switching to cloth at night too. We got our order of one-size yesterday, so I washed them and they were ready. They are supposed to fit 8 lb. through 44 lb., and since Emma was over 8 lbs on Tuesday, we figured they would fit. Well... they do fit but apparently when she's laying on her side, there's enough of a gap for pee to come out. And come out it did while we were nursing -- on Mommy, on the bed, and all over her! Poor gal... luckily it was around 7am, so we just got up and cleaned everything up and had breakfast.
Great things today:
*We went for another walk and enjoyed the fresh air
*Mommy made steel-cut oats with blueberries for breakfast
*Daddy got a nap
*Mommy balanced the checkbook and paid bills (well, that's not good but it's necessary!)
Challenging things:
*She's still getting very upset at 10pm (we're ruling things out but haven't quite figured out the solution yet).
*We're not a big fan of floor tummy time (although tummy time on Mommy is fine)
*Mommy's right boobie is engorged for some reason
All in all, not bad! :) We'll see how tonight goes.
Here are some pictures that Daddy took with his fancy camera and lens!
During tummy time!
Laying on her side in Mommy's arms, WIDE awake!

Not sure when Daddy took this, but it's *adorable*.

Another "Good" Day
Mommy feels like today was another fairly successful day, just in terms of feeling confident! We had a rough night, but during the day things were ok. Mommy & Emma went to a local park while the weather was good and we walked 3 miles! Then we ran to go do a quick shopping errand, and came home. Mommy did 2 loads of laundry (diapers and Emma's clothes), and even "cooked" supper (I say cooked because I just boiled spaghetti and heated up sauce). Dishes aren't done but that's totally ok. :)
We have figured out some of her patterns.... at 6pm, 10pm and 6am, she has her "fussy" times where she'll cry and it's difficult to console her. I'm not sure if has anything to do with feeding or diapers, but rather just a time where she needs to get some excess energy out. If Joe and I can figure out how to manage ourselves during those times, I think we'll be ok!
I've got to capture some video of tummy time to share, and Daddy finally downloaded a ton of pictures, so hopefully more of those to share too.

Better Day
Quick post while I have both hands!
HUGE thank you to everyone on here who gave me some great suggestions and support. Emily & Jess, I've been drinking more and the headache is gone! Feeling much better. We tried the miracle blanket and re-tried the wrap, and she's doing better. I've also been eating better, which has helped.
To my friend Mary in Cincy -- we finally watched "The Happiest Baby" DVD you sent us and THANK YOU! OMG, seriously? Totally worked. I mean, we were already doing the "shushing" and swaddling part, but the other stuff was amazing. We bypassed most of the 10:30 screaming fit she usually has. Mommy actually got about 5 hours of sleep (all together) last night.
We went for a walk today! Yes, Mommy has *finally* figured out the stroller. So we put on the little hat and mittens that Mims sent us, got bundled up, and Mommy & Emma went for a walk. The sun is kind of shining and it's not horribly cold (36 degrees). We walked for 30 minutes and came home for her lunch. It felt SO good to get fresh air and be outside, and Mommy's mood is muchly improved!
We toured one daycare yesterday, and hopefully will have another one to tour tomorrow when I can get that scheduled. It wasn't as bad as I was thinking in my head, so even though it's costly, Mommy thinks it'll be ok. AND they had openings. *whew*
Ok.... someone wants to walk around (she's in the wrap against my chest right now), so I'm going to do that. But again... thank you, everyone! I can't tell you how much it helps to hear the experienced Mommy advice!

Rough Night
Up from 10pm to 1:30am screaming.... solid. No break. No help. Mommy doesn't know what to do. :(

What a Day!
Mommy and Emma had both a good and bad day...
Good Day Stuff:
*We went to the New Moms Group again
*We went to the library and picked up the Newborn packet, and learned that they have a newborn/infant reading time (0-18 months) on Mondays.
*We got weighed at the hospital and are up to 8lbs 11 1/2oz!! (this is from 8lb, 2oz a week ago)
*Mommy's nursing tops for when she goes back to work came in the mail (well, 2 of them did).
*Mommy & Emma got a package from Cousin Debbie today -- thank you! Such adorable stuff, I'll have to take a picture.
Not Good Stuff:
*Mommy is FREAKING about day care. We really only need part-time daycare, but most daycares won't do that. Mommy and Daddy delayed thinking about daycare (partly because we were so scarred from all the losses that we weren't convinced she would actually be here!), so now we're scrambling. I want a place that's close, affordable, and reputable -- AND will let us use cloth diapers. I don't think that place exists.
*Mommy feels inadequate because she has to go back to work and really doesn't want her daughter to go to daycare at 12 weeks of age. :(
*Mommy has had a headache for days. It just won't go away, and it got worse while we were out.
I wish we were closer geographically to our family. :(

Poop Explosion!
At the 3am feeding this morning, Emma seemed super fussy, so I had Daddy change her diaper mid-feeding. She was grunting and squirming, a sure sign she's getting ready to let loose. Well, she did! Right as Daddy was turning around to drop the dirty wipe into the pail, she let a stream of poop out -- shot out and hit the side of the diaper pail, which is about 4 feet from the bed!! Daddy and I just laughed and laughed and laughed. Emma was not amused. :) Poor kid... I feel for her. There had to be SO much pressure built up for her to squirt that far!
She's definitely a super-pooper. She is slowing down on the number of poops in a day, however, and pooping more at each time. That is reassuring to me, and nice because it'll mean fewer diaper changes. Of course, she's still doing a lot of wet farts, which she *hates*, so we're changing each of those too. Still washing the entire stash of prefolds (24) daily.

Because She's Adorable
I felt the need for MORE pictures! She's 3 weeks, 5 1/2 days old. :)
Emma wearing an outfit that Grandma Miller sent, one of mine when I was a little girl! She was NOT happy about sitting up for the picture, as you can see. LOL!

Here she is, using the miracle blanket that Emily sent -- it was perfect!

Mommy spent time yesterday crocheting for the first time since Emma came into the world, and made this!

Closeup of the cuteness. :)

And her teeny-tiny little hand...

Next to Mommy's HUGE hand!

Holding hands.... so sweet. :)

Pictures Again!
It's been a few days since I posted.... Miss Emma is doing great, and although we're still not in a "routine" as such, she does have some recognizable patterns of behavior. Mommy and Daddy are still adjusting, and doing the best we can!
Some notable things:
*Emma went to visit Mommy's work office this week twice to meet everyone and thank them for the beautiful flowers!
*Mommy and Daddy went out to eat lunch at a real restaurant WITH Emma and she did great! She's still sleeping much of the time, so it was relatively easy. This time. :)
*We're doing better with tummy time! She doesn't seem to mind (pictures below of the "After" Tummy Time) and she loves the blanket Aunt Sandra sent that works perfectly for tummy time.
*Mommy and Daddy got her insurance card today and it really sunk in that she's ours... we get to keep her, and she'll be with us for a long time. It feels very adult-ish!
*Mommy looked at the bills on her insurance website from both the delivery, recovery and the D&C the week later, and about fainted. OMG. Even with insurance, it's going to be a LOT more than I anticipated. Luckily we saved and saved and saved for this, so we're ok. (I won't go into a rant about the healthcare industry at this point and the obscene amount of money they charge for things).
Ok... enough chatting. Onto the cuteness!
Just hanging out with Mommy... thinking *very* hard about something! :)

After tummy time, just playing. This is a knit blanket that Great-Aunt Sandra sent us, it's absolutely gorgeous!

Extreme Close-Up!! :)

Fell asleep on Daddy.... wore herself out, I think!

After our Fourth bath on Monday (the 10th). She's getting better with baths, there was no screaming this time.

Sleeping with Grandma Miller's blanket -- Mommy tried to get the hat on, but she wouldn't cooperate, so we just posed it with her. :) Thank you for the cute hat Grandma!!

And with the blanket, bonnet and matching mittens that knit and sent. They are gorgeous -- how adorable is that little bonnet?!

Daddy and I agreed that we still need to do the fashion show with some of the outfits that Grandma Miller and others have sent, so that's still in the works. But for the moment, hopefully this will do.

Growth Spurt, I Think
Boy... what a rough night. Emma cried from 10 to midnight, and also fed every hour and a half. She was fussy and wouldn't stay at the breast for as long as normal either. She's still fussy this morning. :(
She wants to be with Momma ONLY (so I'm typing with one hand here).... sounds like a growth spurt, right?

Mommy's First Outing
So Mommy got to drive all by her lonesome today! :) LOL. Emma and I went to the new mommy's support group at Riverside, and then we went over and borrowed the scale at the women's center. "Little" Emma is up to 8lb, 2oz -- she was 7lb, 2oz just 8 days ago! Mommy continues to be very proud of her weight gain, especially since she's just a BF baby. :)
The support group was... ok. Mostly older babies (7-9 months) and it appeared that many of the moms had been coming for some time. But we learned a few things and probably will go back periodically. I imagine it'll be more helpful once I have questions, and especially when we're getting ready to think about childcare.
Then we went and visited Mommy's work to show off! Only 2 people were there, but it was still fun and everyone enjoyed holding her. She was such a good baby the entire time.
We changed two diapers and did one feeding while she was out, which was a first for us. Again, she did really well and Mommy did ok too. Strange how something like just getting out of the house becomes such a "BIG" deal for us!

More Pictures

20 Days Old
Just wanted to do a couple of misc. updates
*Mommy finally got her sitz bath tonight. It's been so cold, especially upstairs where our tub is, that I really didn't want to get undressed and sit in 2 inches of water! I put the space heater up there for 10 minutes beforehand, and that worked like a charm.
*Little one held her head up while on Mommy's chest for between 12-14 seconds yesterday. Daddy tried to get a video of it, I'll upload it a little later.
*We're doing a little better at night; she sleeps between 3 to 3.5 hours in between feedings, but I think that's mainly because she in bed with us now. We never intended on co-sleeping, but she just does *not* want to sleep her in bassinet at night. We'll move her back to her bassinet when she's got a little better routine.
*I'm still super-amazed that our little one is here, and she belongs to us! Every time I look at her sweet little face, I'm so thankful that she is finally here. I can't believe that after every part of this struggle, we've been blessed with her!
*Oh, and I've lost 25 of the 32 pounds I gained during pregnancy! 7 more to go and I'm down to pre-pregnancy weight, and then I need to lose the 30 that I gained during our trying-to-conceive battle and with all those fertility meds.
Pictures tomorrow!

Pictures
New outfits, courtesy of Uncle Dean and Great-Aunt Debbie! (JC Penney's was having a HUGE sale on baby clothes, so we got her a lot of things)
This little outfit is SO super-cute! Monkeys on her feet, heheheh...

And a close-up of my sweet-pea. The little tag says "Let's Go Bananas".

For comparison of the profile, her 19 week ultrasound picture -- how amazing, eh?

We just adore this outfit -- it's a little side-snapping shirt and pants with puppies for the feet. She's got a prefold and cover underneath the pants, so it looks like she's got a big rear! :)

Test Results
My hemoglobin is back up to 9.6, yay!! I think by the time I have my follow-up appointment on 1/27, I should be back to "normal." Still taking the iron supplements twice a day, and the antibiotics until the 13th.
Grandma Miller sent a box of just super-duper adorable clothes that I think used to be mine. After I do a load of laundry, I think we're going to have a mini fashion show and take a load of pictures. Daddy still has to download the pictures from Aunt Ann's trip so I can get some of those up here too.
It's snowing and gorgeous out -- I'm half tempted to get Emma all dressed up and in the snow suit that a friend gave us, and take her out for some pictures.

OB appointment and misc
We had our surgery follow-up appointment today. Have I mentioned how much I love my OB? She is so compassionate and even though she was heading out to a birth at the hospital, she made sure she came in to see me and talk to me about how my surgery went. I had no indication that she was in any hurry at all.
Apparently what was stuck in there was a lobe of placenta. Not uncommon, but not common either (both Daddy and I were wondering if that was what had caused my bleeding at week 9??). And apparently it smelled quite bad and was very infected. They got some other, smaller pieces of placenta out but this piece was large. About the size of a mayo jar lid, according to what she demonstrated. It's scary to think how close I was to being septic and possibly getting very, very ill. She asked me to monitor my bleeding, and put me on another antibiotic for a week since things are still not quite ok. She also re-drew a CBC today.
So I'm on Keflex (generic) 4x/day for 7 days... it's safe to take while breastfeeding (have I mentioned how pro-BF my OB is?), and she asked me to call if anything changed.
After the OB appointment, we went home and had lunch, and then decided to head over to the mall so Mommy could get some exercise in. We made one loop around the top floor, and one full loop around the bottom floor before I got worn out. Emma did great the entire time, and it was fun to push her stroller around -- I felt like a REAL Mom! We checked out the family bathroom so we knew where we could change her and feed her if we needed, and we even did some shopping at JC Penny's, where Uncle Dean got her a gift card for Christmas. We got the most adorable stuff, and still have some of the card leftover! Thank you Uncle Dean!! Pictures will be coming when she's wearing everything (one thing is a onsie that says "Here Comes Trouble" -- too precious).
Mommy is exhausted, and Daddy has class tomorrow, so we're all going to bed early. We're also supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow, so Daddy wants to get up early to get a head start down to campus. I'm hoping he'll have time to download the pictures from Aunt Ann's visit so I can edit those and put those online.
We just finished reading a few pages of her book and now she's asleep in my arms. She's too adorable. She has been sleeping a lot today, between all the trips everywhere she's worn out. Hopefully this doesn't mean she'll be up all night! :)

Funny Moment (& Pictures)
Mom, you'll appreciate this...
Joe was out running some errands so he could start school tomorrow, so Emma and I were alone at home. She needed changed, so I got everything prepped and undressed her. I had pulled off her diaper, put her on the new cloth diaper and reached over for the wet cloth wipe when she let out a poop spray! Yes.... it was literally a fountain of poop, and it arced OVER the cloth diaper, hit the side of the pack-n-play, ran down the side of the pack-n-play (which is mesh, btw) and made a little pool at the bottom.
Mommy could do nothing but start laughing.... it was TOO funny! I covered her with another diaper, got another clean wipe, got her cleaned up and a fresh diaper on, and then put her on a blanket on the floor and cleaned up the pack-n-play. That took forever to clean the mesh! And the carpet (there was some splatter there too).
Reminded me of the story Mom tells about how my older brother was getting changed on their bed, and shot poo out so hard that it hit the closet door. :) This wasn't quite that violent, but it definitely had some distance.
Now, for your viewing pleasure! (and no, I did not take pictures of the poo)
This was taken yesterday during the Bears game by Daddy.... he calls it the Touchdown Baby picture! :) Ever since Emma was born, 'da Bears have had a perfect season, lol.

Mommy & Emma took a nap this afternoon, and when Daddy came home, I had him take a picture of us (I was awake but closed my eyes for the picture). I know we're not supposed to be sleeping like this together, but we were way too comfy. :)
